Devon Dumplings v Sydney Rogues
Sydney Rogues 185 (40 overs) DD 186 for 9 (37.1 overs) DD won by1 wkt.
Veteran Australian teams are a bit like buses, after a gap of 6 years we play two such teams in a season. Sydney Rogues had been let down by their opponents, but with a ground booked we managed to raise a team at short notice. Richard Tidball as Match Manager could only get 9 players, so two Antipodeans- Mark Bury and Michael McCarron - were borrowed for the day. Sydney Rogues still managed to field 12 players, all of whom batted. Players retired on 30, but could then return if needed, as happened in the Dumplings innings.
Sydney Rogues batted first having won the toss.
The two Aussie players were put to good use with Bury opening the bowling and claiming 2 wickets in his 8 overs. McCarron also turned his arm over and took a wicket. Pick of our bowling was Paul Berman taking 3 for 26.
Tidball kept wicket, not his usual fielding position, but nevertheless claimed a stumping.
After a delicious Judy Jolliffe tea, it was time for the Dumplings to bat but it didn’t start well with opener Ali Poll back in the pavilion after only 3 balls. Nitin Matthews and Dan Coles steadied the ship putting on 39 together before they fell in quick succession. Andrew Daldorph and Pete Turner batted well before they both retired. McCarron batting at number 8 also retired. Both Daldorph and Turner returned helping out at the end to secure a victory with almost 3 overs to spare.
Thanks to umpire Neville Pritchard and to debutant scorer Richard Sommers.
