Devon Dumplings v Somerset Stragglers

Wednesday 04 June 2025 at Bishop's Lydeard

D D: 152 (36.4 overs) Somerset Stragglers 155 for 4 (26.1 overs.) DD Lost by 6 wickets.

The Dumplings travelled to Somerset to play the Stragglers at Bishops Lydeard as part of the
hosts 125th anniversary year. This lovely, tucked-away ground, home now to Wombat CC,
was a new one for most of us.  Dumplings won the toss and elected to bat first on a good-
looking strip. We were soon undone by a fine opening spell by Sunil Lachit, a quick left-arm
swing bowler with List A and 1st class experience from Assam, India. He bowled both openers
Wessel Oosthuizen and Xavier Warmbrunn and had skipper Graham White caught behind.
With number three Mitch Brooker nicking off at the other end, the Dumplings were in a
pickle at 43 for 4. Aditya More played well for 35 and Rahul Gupta contributed 30 unbeaten
from number 10. Their efforts saw us reach 152 all out.
That never felt enough and proved not to be, despite Rob Stevens being caught at point early
for a duck. Opener Harry Everett 41 (also a Dumpling) and Sam Shaikh broke the back of the
chase with a partnership off 83 for the second wicket. Some tidy spin delayed matters, but
the Stragglers ultimately knocked the runs off after 26 overs for 4 down. This meant the
Peter Spencer Trophy is held by the Stragglers for the first time. Peter was a prominent
member of both clubs and the trophy will be placed in the Somerset Cricket Museum at
Taunton with an appropriate explanatory note. Unless we win it back next year of course!
