Devon Dumplings v Ashford

Monday 26 May 2025 at Shobrooke Park

DD 169 for 6 (40 overs). Ashford 171 for 8 (39.3 overs) Ashford won by 2 wkts.

After a dry warm spring, the English weather returned to normal with some rain expected on
the Bank Holiday Monday for our game against Ashford, in Surrey, They have been touring South Devon since 1947 but have only in the last few years been on our fixture list.
Dominic Tuohey won the toss and chose to bat first, opening up with youngsters Ed
Wilson and Alex James. Unfortunately James was soon back in the pavilion. The run rate was
a little slow for a 40 over game, but conditions were not ideal and a rain break didn’t help
either. Wilson picked up the pace before being stumped on 34. Aditya More and Abdullah
Merchant enjoyed a 70-run partnership for the 5th wicket taking the score to 143 in the 35th
over. Merchant reached his 50 off the last ball of the innings and Dumplings had 169 to
defend.
Ashford’s reply started positively and by the half way mark had already scored 106 despite
Muhammed Mashal taking two wickets in the 15th over. Muhammed Afzaal Butt was in
striking distance of his 50 when he was run out by More taking Ashford to 125 for 5 off 25
overs. Owais Ahmed returned in the 30th over, claiming 2 wickets, and suddenly Ashford were
138 for 7. The numerous Ashford spectators were suddenly anxious as Wilson claimed a stumping
off Joe Poustie in the next over. Thirty more runs were still required but Christopher Lunn and
Gurpal Hundal steadied the ship and saw Ashford home with 3 balls to spare and 2 wickets in
hand.
Thanks to our umpire Paul Berman, and scorer Sheila Harding and to Robin Lambert who
was a very capable assistant to the grateful tea lady.
