Devon Dumplings v West Buckland

Wednesday 28 June 2023 at The School

DD 215 for 5 dec. West Buckland School 146. DD won by 69 runs.

No trip to West Buckland happens without some precipitation within a couple of miles of the ground. So a slight delay to the start, and then the last couple of overs were not pleasant in drizzle, but we managed to have a full game.  Yesterday's game saw two batsman score in excess of 150 each, today we watched two Dumplings bowlers on hat-trick balls. Old Boy and our captain for the day, James Tyson, crowded all the players around the batsman for both balls, but each time the bowler, Sangeeth Sohan and Freddie Creer was thwarted.

We went with 10 players, but the father of the School’s wicketkeeper shot off to get his kit to help us out. Steve Carrick loves fielding and he certainly put some effort into it, rolling over a time or two as he stopped the ball. Bernie Wilson, another old boy, was coaxed out of retirement for this match, but is it really his last given he bought himself a brand new Dumplings cap?

The Dumplings batted first having won the toss, but one of the stars of yesterday Teriq Worrell, promoted to opener, was soon caught behind without scoring. The bounce was a little uneven but we still had a big partnership of 107 between Sam Reddick and Freddie Creer before Reddick was caught having scored 76. Neil Collins was unlucky to get run out with a direct hit from the boundary by Ed Wilson. George Daldorth and Creer pushed the scoring along at the end so that we could declare on 215 for 5 after 41 overs.

The School’s opening bat, Sandy Carrick, was going well until Daldorth pulled off a one-handed caught & bowled with the score on 32. Archie S & WG hung around together taking the score to 104 for 3 before Ronaldo Callender was brought on, bowling WG with only his second delivery. The innings started to fall apart, with Sohan taking 2 wickets in 2 balls. Their captain, Rohan Cross tried to rescue them and was soon on 35 with four 6s and two 4s, but then Creer hit a purple patch with a runout, then followed by three wickets in his 1.1 overs, and the school were suddenly all out for 144.

Thanks to West Buckland for their hospitality and for Richard Tidball for getting the team together.
