Devon Dumplings v Arden Taverners

Monday 25 July 2022 at Shobrooke Park

Arden Taverners 318 Devon Dumplings 162. Arden Taverners won by 156 runs.

The Dumplings returned for a second visit to Shobrooke Park on a pleasant day. President Dominic Tuohey presented Peter Spencer Bequest caps to debutants Jem Fawssett and Sam Bowker. Shobrooke overseas Jermain Harding also received a cap sponsored by Peter Jolliffe, sadly not present due to Covid. The two captains decided to play a declaration game rather than the previously agreed 50 overs match, Arden Taverners kindly provided additional help in the kitchen to Wendy Hardy.

After winning the toss and batting first on a fast outfield, the visitors made a rapid start, reaching 32 before losing their first wicket in the 5th over. Jermain Harding got the breakthrough when he bowled Joe West for 14. The batting side were helped by some indifferent fielding and several dropped catches. There was some big hitting by opener Tyler Scroop (73) but he fell to an excellent boundary catch by Harding. With support from their No. 3 James Smith (25) and No 4 Vataly Wilkinson (67) the total had reached 199 before the 4th wicket fell. But the onslaught continued, with runs from Luke Williams (51), Jack Bamford (31) and Liam Phillips (17) and the total had reached 270 for 6 after only 41 overs. Things eventually calmed down a bit with the innings finishing on 318 all out in 49.4 overs. Most of the bowlers had proved rather expensive. The most successful were Harding with 3-37, and Dominic Tuohey 3-84, but those dropped catches were expensive.

Faced with such a target a good start was essential. Unfortunately it was not to be and the required run rate was never achieved. Harry Kandampully (28), Graham White (19), Harding (22) and Jem Fawssett (30) all fell in trying to up the rate. At 126 for 5, Bamford took 3 quick wickets finishing with 3-12. Despite a last wicket flourish of 18 from Jonty Brett and stubborn support from last man Joe Poustie the innings closed on 162 in 41.2 overs.

Arden Taverners: 318 (Scroop 73, Wilkinson 67, Williams 57 – Harding 3/37, Tuohey 3/84. DD: 162 (Fawsett 30. Bamford 3/12 Ridings 2/27.).

Arden Taverners won by 156 runs.
